About the piece

The sculpture

Wave Heart creates a place for people to come together and capture the beauty of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach through its heart-shaped “window” facing the vast Pacific Ocean.

One year of design time and several hundred man-hours of fabrication brought Wave Heart to life. Commissioned as a site-specific installation by the Friends of Ocean Beach Park in  collaboration with Building 180, this piece first started as a paper sketch of a much smaller sculpture. Wes rendered the final design in CAD using Fusion 360.

The final pieces were laser-cut from Cor-Ten steel, featuring slot-and-tab construction to align all the components and to speed fabrication. Wes and his crew of 3 other builders - Kevin, Luke, and Eddy - prepped, assembled, and MIG-welded the sculpture at Wes’ metal shop in Richmond, California.

Artist / Builder: Wes Skinner

Wes is an East-Bay based artist and metal fabricator, born and raised in Southern California with family roots in the Bay Area.  He started welding and fabrication through working on large-scale metal art installations with several different art collectives.  After several years of creating small metal sculptures of his own, he was inspired to start his own small business in architectural metal fabrication.

His shop in Richmond, Yzzo Studios, specializes in functional yet artistic installations. Wes has collaborated with a wide range of clients to design and build beautiful gates, railings, and other architectural installations.  Using his knowledge and experience in fabrication, Wes has recently expanded his skill set to include production design and 3D CAD modeling, and is now back in school part-time pursuing a degree in Industrial Design.
